Overview of the School Games

The School Games programme is a celebration of physical activity and school sport that involves all young people from year 3-13 of all abilities and backgrounds.  With the support from the School Sport Partnership young people are given the opportunity to participate in a year round sporting calendar with over 30 sports available, specifically designed to get children competing at intra-school and inter school levels.

There are 4 pillars to the School Games structure: Compete, Participate, Develop & For All.

COMPETE: These are competitions that are competitive, you can enter only 1 team, and the winners of these events will usually go through to represent Thurrock in the Essex School Games.

PARTICIPATE: These are events/festival type events that are focused on the School Games Values and aimed at developing lifeskills and character.

DEVELOP: These events are targeted at specific groups of children such as SEN, girls, BAME, semi sporty, disengaged.

FOR ALL: These are motivational whole school events such as NSSW, santa dash, sport relief, Road to Tokyo type iniatives and events, aimed to get the whole school and community active.

The School Games is made up of 4 levels of competition:

Level 1: Intra-school competition, culminating in a School Games day

Level 2: Regular inter-school competition between schools at a local level – including partnership competitions

Level 3: Annual county/area culmination of inter-school competitions – School Games Festivals

Level 4: National multi-sport event
