The latest results for the annual school sport survey from the Department of Children, Schools and Families are out today and for the first time measure the number of young people taking part in 3 hours of PE and school sport a week.

The figures show that 51% of five to eighteen years olds are taking part in 3 hours of PE and school sport with the survey also showing increases in the number of young people involved in inter and intra school competition and leadership and volunteering.

Schools are now offering an impressive 18 sports on average for pupils to take part in, which compares to 14 in 2003/04.  Cycling has seen the biggest increase this year.

Schools now have links to an average of 8.2 listed clubs.Previous school sport surveys have only measured the number of young people participating in 2 hours of PE and school sport with the 2007/08 survey showing that 90% of pupils were reaching that figure.

The Government’s long-term aim, is to offer all children five hours of sport per week, including two hours within the curriculum, and three hours outside the curriculum by 2012.

Steve Grainger, chief executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said: “It is fantastic news that more young people are participating in PE and sport and on behalf of the Youth Sport Trust I would like to congratulate everyone who has played their part in making this happen. Typically schools now offer an impressive 18 sports for pupils to take part in and I think it’s no coincidence that on that back of Team GBs success in Beijing that cycling is the sport that is rapidly growing in our schools. With London 2012 on the horizon, the Youth Sport Trust will remain focused on ensuring that PE and school sport engages all young people and that we continue to provide more opportunities to participate, compete, lead and volunteer in sport.”

Thurrock's results are published below, however there is NO NEWS on Activemark or Sportsmark and the likely news is that there will be no Activemark or Sportsmark for this year, based on the results below.
