SLH Crowned Champions of SE England!

On Saturday 27th March 2010 the Stanford Le Hope Primary School's football team, having won the Malcolm Moffatt Cup, were at the Essex Schools FA South-East Regional Football Finals representing Thurrock and Essex.

The team were in a group of 5 teams and needed to finish as either winners or runners-up of this group to qualify for the semi-finals. Their results were:

  • Game 1 - Vs Gateway (Buckinghamshire) - Drew 0-0
  • Game 2 - Vs Hurst (Kent) - Drew 0-0
  • Game 3 - Vs North Ealing (Middlesex) - Drew 0-0
  • Game 4 - Vs North Wotton (Norfolk) - Won 2-0

These results were enough to see the team qualify for the semi-finals as runners-up of their group. In the semi-finals the team played St Mary's (Surrey) and this match was still tied 0-0 at half time. Soon after half time the school's team scored the opening goal and, as St Mary's went forward searching for an equaliser, the team scored a further 3 goals thanks to some very incisive counter attacking play to see them through to the finals.

The final was then a return fixture with our opening opponents - Gateway. A very hard fought, evenly contested match went to full time and through extra-time without either team scoring meaning the final would be decided on penalties. After each school had taken the 5 allotted penalties the score was tied at 3-3 and the shoot out entered sudden death. The next 3 penalties, one from us and two from Gateway, were missed and Ryan stepped up and smashed home what proved to be the decisive, match-winning penalty.

The school then received their medals and awards and were officially crowned champions of South-East England.

A truly fantastic achievement for the school but most importantly for the ten boys who represented the school so well. So, congratulations to Charlie Elliott, Segun Kehinde, Callum McCarthy, Alfie Drum, Adam Lakey, Jack Willis, Jack Rogers, Shea Waters, Ryan Peckham and Aaron Child who will now head to the National Finals that are taking place at Watford on Saturday 1st May 2010 for the chance to be crowned champions of England.A remarkable achievement that I'm sure everyone in the school will be immensely proud of.

WELL DONE BOYS!! Thanks also to all of the parents and staff who supported the team so brilliantly.
