William Edwards splash!

Thurrock Swimming Club in association with Impulse Leisure hosted the annual Schools Gala at Blackshots Leisure Centre on a sunny afternoon at the beginning of July. Taking part with the other 12 borough schools was the impressive team from William Edwards School and Sports College.

Under the sporting direction of P.E. teacher, Miss Claire Grimes, 16 pupils from the Secondary School based in Stifford Clays, swept the board with an outstanding number of first place wins.  Fielding not only an A team but a B team the school recorded substantial wins to become top boys team and top girls team in the borough thereby being crowned the 2010 Secondary Schools gala winners for the second consecutive year.  Head of P.E Deri Reid said “I am so proud to be part of such an impressive school team this year. The trophy will take pride of place in our school”.

The A team comprising 4 boys and 4 girls notched up 11 out of 12 wins in events which included one length swims in backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and the gruelling butterfly.  Both the boys and girls 4 x 1 length medley relay and freestyle relay teams recorded first place spots with outstanding swims by borough swimmers including Thurrock Swimming Club’s home grown swimmers competing at their home pool; Katherine Stephens, Georgia Mills, Salaam Motin and national swimmers Sonny Ford and James Day.  Joining the borough swimmers in the A team were Amy Gore, Charlotte Stephens and hammer thrower and Basildon Phoenix swimmer Thomas Head.Not to be outdone by their peers the William Edwards B team also comprising 4 boys and 4 girls recorded 9 out of 12 first place wins with identical first place wins in both the boys and girls medley relay and freestyle relays. The B team was made up of Carla Briggs, Ellie Nicholl, George White, Tom Archer, Joe Brown and Thurrock Swimming Club team mates Hope Jones and Kalaam Motin, joined by Thurrock Harriers athlete Chloe Bass.The day was once again an outstanding success bringing together all the schools in the borough forming part of a sporting tradition at Blackshots.   A big “thank you” should go to both Thurrock Swimming Club volunteers and Impulse Leisure for putting on such a worth while cause for the children of Thurrock schools, both primary and secondary.Anyone wishing to know more about what Thurrock Swimming Club offers should contact Club Secretary, Hazel Day, on [email protected].
