William Edwards win Borough XC title!

William Edwards School & Sports College athletes excelled themselves again on Tuesday at Blackshots Park in the Borough Cross Country Championships winning 4 gold’s from the 6 available race categories. Both boys and girls teams ran superbly and in a display of grit and determination secured top spot retaining the overall borough championship title 2010/2011.

With roughly 90 competitors poised on the start line the year 7 girls were first to run and set an amazing standard with 8 of the 10 athletes finishing in the top 10! Elle Smith won gold finishing 1st, closely followed by Gemma Archer Hayley (silver), Ellie Robinson (bronze), Stephanie Clay (4th), Lucy Moore (5th), Nicolle Kappes (6th), Lilley Jewell (7th) and Lauren Cable (10th). With the first 6 athletes scoring for the team this them the perfect score of 21points setting a new district record and sending a clear message to competitors. Team totals resulted with William Edwards claiming gold with 21 points, St Clere’s taking silver with 117points and Gateway bronze with 156 ponits

The year 7 boys team had a very tough race and faced stiff competition from both St Clere’s and Gable Hall. Sam Smith narrowly missed out on the gold and finished 2nd taking the silver and Shaun Gittleson was pipped at the post just losing out on the bronze medal finishing 4th. Tyler Chu sneaked in the top 10 finishing 9th and Bayley Newell grabbed 12th place. Alfie Walters (19th) and Jack Elliot (20th) finished in the top 20. The overall team total was 66 resulting with them finishing 3rd behind Gable Hall (64) and St Clere’s (57).

In the third race of the day the junior girls team continued the form of recent years with the whole team finishing in the top 20. 7 of the 10 strong team finished in the top 10 as Thurrock Harrier, Gemma Holloway brought the team home to finish 1st taking the gold,  Stepanie Paci (3rd) taking bronze, closely followed by Georgia Mills (4th), Katherine Stephens (5th), Sarah Landy (7th), Chay Clark (8th) and Holly Moore (9th). With the 3 remaining team members  (Ruby Winchester 12th, Libby Greenstreet 13th and Ellyse Skeggs 17th) finishing strongly this resulted with the team scoring  a ridiculously low score of 27 points to take the gold! St Clere’s took the silver scoring 129 points and Ockendon the bronze with 162.

The junior boys team continued in the same vain and lived up to expectation as Daniel Landy ran in 1st to take the gold medal closely followed by  Jordan Nicoll in 2nd place to take the silver. Mason Illey finished well in 8th closely followed by Macauly Joynes (9th), Callum Murray (11th), Tom Byrne (12th) and Keelan Howes (13th). Sean Brooks also sneaked into the top 20 resulting with the team securing another gold scoring 43 points. Gable Hall took the silver scoring 112points and Chafford took the bronze scoring 131 points.

The intermediate girls claimed top spot for the second year running and Thurrock Harrier, Rebecca Barnard won the gold by a country mile! Georgia Fraser claimed the bronze finishing 3rd and little sister Courtney was close behind taking the 4th spot. Lauren Landy finished strong to take the 6th spot and last minute recruitment Rheann Randall displayed grit and determination to finish in 11th place who was closely followed by Kirsty Highwood in 12th position. With the first 4 scoring for the team the overall total was a measly but mighty impressive 14 points to take gold, beating St Clere’s who took silver with 53 and the Convent who took the bronze with 71 points.

The final race and most gruelling of them all is the 2.5 mile intermediate boys race. Jordan Purkiss ran well but just missed out on a podium position and finished 4th. Lawrence Petts (11th) ran superbly along with Lewis Moore (14th). Chris Storr (20th), JJ Jameson (21st) and Brad Merchant (27th) secured the team total of 82 points but lost out on the gold to Gable Hall who scored 74 points.

Combined team scores at the end of the competition resulted with William Edwards retaining the district crown and improving on last year’s performance by 30 points. William Edwards scored 254 to take the gold, beating St Clere’s who came in 2nd to take silver with 657 points and Gateway the bronze with 865 points.

Well done to all athletes who took part in the Borough Cross Country, and good luck to those who will go on to represent Thurrock at the Essex School Cross Country Championships in the new year.
